Glaciers in Iceland cover around 11% of the country’s surface. What's unique about glaciers is their ability to move. They crawl forwards due to sheer mass - like very slow rivers. Although glaciers are persistent, they slowly deform as they flow, creating crevasses, cracks, and sometimes beautiful glacier ice caves.
In Iceland, where some glaciers can be easily visited by foot, the changes of the landscape due to global warming and climate change are clearly visible. The shockingly fast shrinking of the glaciers can be witnessed not just by looking at the landscape, but also by all the icebergs floating in Glacier Lake and on the famous Diamond Beach of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.
Following, is a presentation of works which were created in 2023 and 2024, after artists Peter Bremers and Jim Schantz traveled together to find inspiration in the land of ice. Two people who each feel a spiritual aspect in spacious nature, as well as great concern for the environment.
Through Peter Bremers skill with the visual qualities of glass, these dynamic objects seem four dimensional and offer a unique vision on their subject.
Jim Schantz’s use of both pure and occasionally exaggerated color in two-dimensional paint and pastel, prompts our awareness of the incredible changes in light and atmosphere occurring in nature.
